Universal Quantum Ltd.

Universal Quantum Ltd. says it is building useful, utility-scale quantum computers designed to work reliably at scale. Its website states that the company follows an engineering-led roadmap and is developing systems based on a modular architecture. The company traces its origins to a 2017 blueprint for a large-scale trapped-ion quantum computer published by founders Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, and says it incorporated the business the following year.

The company describes itself as a UK business with additional sites in Germany and the USA, and says it is producing its next generation of devices for clients including the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). Universal Quantum also highlights UQConnect, which it describes as technology for connecting quantum modules at near-perfect fidelity. On its homepage, the company states that it has raised more than $100 million in a Series A round to scale quantum computing globally.

In November 2026 the company launched the iQPU, an integrated trapped-ion processing unit with more than 400 mm² of active area, an on-chip control ASIC and built-in UQConnect interfaces, fabricated on a commercial 200 mm foundry line and designed to operate at about 70 K. DLR, which awarded Universal Quantum €67 million in contracts for two quantum computers, Toccata and Legato, will be its first customer. The company's October 2026 Series A of more than $100 million was co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures.
